"Humming" Brook

About Brook

Brook is known for his strange personality, being a combination of a gentlemanly persona and a perverted sort. He speaks in a dignified, educated manner at most times, but is known to have amazingly bad manners (burping and farting at dinner, casually asking to see womens' panties, picking at other peoples' food, etc).

Brook is also known to adore bone puns. He takes any chance he can to make a comment about his skeletal nature, almost inevitably following with "Yoho! Skull joke!!" Example: "I was so shocked, my eyes nearly popped out of my head! BUT I HAVE NO EYES!!"

Brook has a distinct laugh, always known to give off a jolly "Yohoho!"

Abilities

Brook carries a shikomizue (Japanese cane sword), and is extremely skilled in its use. He can also combine his shikomizue and violin to create sound-based attacks. He was once a fighter in the surprise-attack squadron of an unknown kingdom. In addition to his sword skill, Brook's lightweight skeleton body gives him great speed and the ability to jump extraordinarily high. His body is so light that he is even capable of running on water, however, Brook is still powerless if submerged in water, like all Devil Fruit users. Brook is also an excellent musician, displaying the ability to play any instrument at a highly skilled level. He's even capable of playing songs that drive anyone who hears them to sleep, which proves to be useful in combat. Brook claims he can heal from most fractures to his body by drinking milk. His head can also be opened up and used as a storage device, which is currently being used to store a Tone Dial containing the last song of the Rumba Pirates. Brook uses an unnamed fencing sword style and is actually quite a skilled fencer and can use quick stabs because of his skeleton anatomy.

One of his signature attacks is the "Arrow Notch Strike", a sword technique so fast that the actual strike is not seen, and the recipient is unaware they have been struck until a significant amount of time after the attack (usually a few seconds, about the amount of time it takes to resheath his sword).

During his time on Thriller Bark, Brook developed a reputation among the inhabitants as a mysterious warrior who would sing a haunting tune just before he struck down a squad of zombies in a flash. This turned out to be because Brook himself was afraid of the horrible place, and sought to calm himself by humming or singing as he went. He also used his superior speed to mow down the opponents, mostly so that he could not scare himself with their appearance.

While dead and seemingly able to last long periods without food or water, Brook's body seems to be able to act as a normal person's. That is, he is either shown or implied to be able to eat, drink, cry and digest normally. His skeletal body may possibly give him enhanced resistance to pain or injury, as he would be more difficult to injure without blood or organs.

"Cyborg" Franky

About Franky

According to Eiichiro Oda, Franky is represented by the color light blue, and he smells of carpentry wood and gunpowder, much like Usopp. Franky was created by Oda with Kazuki Yao's voice in mind because of his portrayals as Jango and Mr. 2 Bon Clay.

Franky is a cyborg who makes his first appearance in the city of Water 7 as the founder and leader of the Franky Family, a group of ship dismantlers and delinquents. Even though he is not technically part of the crew during the Water 7 Arc he joins with the Straw Hat crew to fight the World Government and CP9. With Nico Robin they are both held by CP9 who holds him for Tom's work on the Gold Roger's ship. With the help of the Straw Hat pirates, Franky defeats Spandam and helps the pirates escape from the marines. With their escape he is reluctant to join the crew because he doesn't want to leave his friends and home behind. His dream is to build a ship capable of sailing to the end of the Grand Line. He partially accomplished this when he constructed the Straw Hat pirates' second ship, the Thousand Sunny. He is currently sailing with the crew to completely fulfill his dream.

Franky (known originally as Cutty Flam) was born the son of a pirate in South Blue and crossed into the Grand Line when he was four years old. After being abandoned at 10 years old, he became the apprentice of the master shipwright Tom, who built Gold Roger's ship, the Oro Jackson. He and Iceburg helped Tom construct the sea train after Spandam, leader of CP5 at that time, brought charges against Tom in order to pressure him into surrendering the blueprints to the superweapon, Pluton. After completing the sea train, Tom refused to give up the blueprints of the ancient warship Pluton, resulting in Spandam using Cutty Flam's fleet of warships to attack Water 7. In order to protect Cutty, Tom takes the blame for the attack and is sentenced to the Marine prison Impel Down. Cutty Flam tries to stop the sea train as it is taking Tom away, but is run over by the charging engine. Nearly dead, he awakens on a scrapped vessel and uses the nearby parts to create his cyborg body. Cutty Flam later returns to Water 7 under the name Franky, where he rounds up the lowlifes of the city to form the Franky Family. Franky has 'BF36' carved into his shoulders, indicating he is the thirty-sixth iteration of his Battle Franky line. Series creator Eiichiro Oda says Franky has a 'butt-butt-chin.

When asked why Franky is powered by cola, Oda simply replied "COLA IS GOOD".

Powers and abilities

As a cyborg, Franky's artificial parts grant him incredible strength, as well as making him practically invulnerable to most frontal attacks. He built his cyborg body himself, making his back his only weak point, as he couldn't reach it during construction. His fighting style focuses on projectile attacks, including an extendable right arm and cannons in his left arm. Franky's body is powered by cola, which he stores in a refrigerator built into his stomach. His supply of cola can be refilled by either drinking cola or manually inserting full bottles directly into his refrigerator. His physical strength was enough to easily break through Fukurou's tekkai technique (which gives the body the hardness of steel), while completely out of cola.

Franky is very talented in many forms of construction; aside from building the Straw Hat's Thousand Sunny, Franky is able to build a very stable bridge across a large gap in an instant, using only nearby debris (while also paying amazing attention to detail). He has even proven able to build a flight of stairs as quickly as he can climb them, though they will not remain standing for very long.

Franky's body is also equipped with countless weapons he has installed. These include and are not limited to machine guns, grenade launchers, shields, fire breath, projectile nails, boomerang sideburns, and an intensely strong air gun. His right arm seems to be primarily used for close combat, being revealed to be entirely steel beneath a fleshy glove (which is implied to hit harder when he removes it). His right hand is linked to his wrist by a long chain, allowing him to shoot it like a grappling hook or to punch at great lengths. His left is primarily armed with guns, such as a machine gun in his wrist and a pistol in his finger.

Franky's hair style and attitude are affected by the type of drink he uses for fuel, seen when Chopper accidentally hands him vegetable juice and tea.Franky's strength and weapons are much more powerful when he is fueled by cola, and some of his attacks can not be used without it.His hair acts as a kind of meter to the amount of cola in his stomach, being tall if he is full and sagging if empty. Franky's stomach compartment can hold up to three bottles of cola.

"Demon Child" Nico Robin

About Robin

Series creator Eiichiro Oda has stated that Nico Robin is represented by the color purple and she smells of flowers. Her favorite foods are sandwiches, cakes that are not too sweet, and things that go well with coffee.

Nico Robin is an archaeologist and historian, and possibly the only person in the current One Piece era who can read the fictional poneglyph language. Her dream is to find and decipher the Rio Poneglyph, which is believed to lie at the end of the Grand Line on the island of Raftel.

As an archaeologist, Robin values ancient artifacts and buildings and will risk her life to protect them. She becomes extremely angry with those who destroy these ancient relics. This is best demonstrated during her fight against the Skypeian Yama, who destroyed many of the ruins they were surrounded by to hurt Robin. Robin is consistently portrayed as the wisest and most sensible member of the crew. She has vast knowledge of the One Piece world, and usually keeps her head during surprising situations, allowing her to logically analyze them without losing her cool. This is in direct contrast to the other Straw Hats, who often overreact comically or melodramatically to unexpected happenings and hold irrational ideas and conclusions. Even if the rest of the crew are subjected to extreme facial expressions at the same time, Robin would continue to keep the same calm face.

As a child, Robin lived on the island of Ohara in the West Blue. She studied archeology and history, and became an official archaeologist at the age of eight. Her mother Nico Olivia left her when she was two years old to study poneglyphs and discover the truth of the One Piece world's lost history. Olivia is captured and the Marines discover the secret of Ohara's scholars. She escapes and rushes to Ohara to warn her colleagues. Robin meanwhile has been spending time with a giant named Jaguar D. Saul, who washed up on shore and later turns out to be a vice-admiral of the marines. Robin and Saul make quick friends while he is building a raft to leave the island, but when he discovers who Robin's mother is he warns her that a 'Buster Call' is on the way to Ohara to destroy all of the scholars. During the ensuing battle, Saul destroys a number of Marine ships to protect Robin, but he is eventually killed by Vice-Admiral Kuzan (later known as Aokiji) Kuzan shows Robin mercy, allowing her to escape to a nearby island. The World Government places a bounty on her head of 79 Million beli, claiming she is responsible for the destruction of six Marine ships. She spends several years allying herself with various pirates and other unsavory groups in her search for the poneglyphs, but she is constantly betrayed, gradually eroding her ability to trust people. At 24 years old, she goes to work for Sir Crocodile as "Miss All Sunday", and meets the Straw Hat pirates during the Arabasta rebellion. After the defeat of Crocodile, she stows away on board the Going Merry, telling Luffy that since he saved her when she had no reason to live, he is now responsible for her life.

After the Enies Lobby Arc, Robin becomes one of the center pieces of the crew as she is taken by the World Government. With the help of Franky, the Straw Hat crew go to war with the World Government and face the dreaded CP9 all for the sake of rescuing Robin. It is here Luffy ask Robin what she wants and she exclaims that she wants to live and that she now has a purpose to live for. With this the Straw Hat crew go on the offensive and rescue Robin (Episodes 227-316).

In the most recent Shonen Jump fan poll, Robin ranked as the fifth most popular character and the overall most popular female character.

Another one of Robin's unique characteristic is the way she calls her fellow crew members by their own distinct characteristics. Zoro as Mr. Swordsman, Nami as Miss Navigator, Usopp as Mr. Long Nose, and so forth.

Robin's measurements, according to series author Eiichiro Oda are:

  • Height: 188cm (6'2")
  • Bust99 Waist59 Hips89 (39-23-35").

Powers and abilities

Robin ate the Hana Hana no Mi (Flower Flower Fruit in the English Manga) allowing her to create copies of any of her body parts on any solid surface that she can see, such as her own body, on the bodies of others or on other objects. In battle she most often employs grappling techniques to incapacitate her foe; by replicating her limbs on their body she eliminates the need for close range combat. Robin usually names her techniques using the French word 'Fleur', preceded by a Spanish number corresponding to the number of limbs reproduced. In the 4kids dub, she instead says a number in English before saying "floret". If Robin's replicated body parts are damaged in some way, the damage appears on her actual body.

Robin is extremely intelligent, having taught herself archeology at a very young age. She is also capable of reading poneglyphs, indestructible tablets believed to have been created by an extinct civilization that contain information about the 'Void Century'.

No limit has been given for Robin's replicating ability, but Oda has confirmed that she can only sprout limbs a distance of "200 Hana Hanas" away

"Cotton Candy Lover" Chopper

About Chopper

Chopper grew up on the winter island Drum, where he was an outcast among reindeer due to his blue nose. He ate the Hito Hito no Mi , (Human Human Fruit), giving him the ability to speak, think, and transform into a human. This ability further alienated him from the other reindeer, and he was rejected by the herd. He grew up an outcast until taken in by the fake doctor Hiruluk, a former thief, who accepts Chopper as his assistant and instills within him his initial passion for medicine.

Chopper is very naïve, and has a tendency to believe anything told to him, even the outrageously fictitious, exaggerated lies of Usopp. According to Usopp, Chopper is the most gullible Straw Hat, which is probably the most truthful thing he's ever said.

Chopper's left antler has a metal plate wrapped around it at all times. He originally broke it while retrieving a mushroom for Doctor Hiruluk. The name "Tony Tony Chopper" is partly a play on "Tonakai" ("Reindeer"), and partly on the idea that his horns look like they could chop down trees, according to Hiruluk, the fake doctor who was Chopper's first mentor and friend.

As the doctor of the crew, Chopper has impressive knowledge of medicine and medical drugs, as well as the preparation of remedies and ointments from regular fruits, roots and vegetables found on most islands. Most of this he learned during his apprenticeship under Dr. Hiruluk and Dr. Kureha.

Chopper is also capable of conversing with other animals.

In the most recent Japanese Fan Poll, Chopper is the fourth most popular character. His birthday is Christmas Eve.

Oda has stated that he uses the color pink to represent Chopper, a trait he shares with nearly all doctors from Drum Island. Oda has also stated that Chopper's favorite foods are cotton candy, chocolate, and "sweet stuff".

When creating Chopper, Oda stated that he wanted a mascot who is cute and fearless.

Powers and abilities

Basic Transformations

Chopper ate the "Human Human Fruit" (Hito Hito no Mi), a "Zoan"-type fruit which gives whoever eats it three transformations:

  • Walk Point : This is Chopper's form as a normal reindeer, useful for galloping and general travel on foot. Called "Sprint Boost" in the 4Kids English dub.
  • Brain Point : Similar to Chopper's standard form, with a small body and large head. He is smarter in this form. In addition, he can scope out an enemies weakness in this form, while he is under the influence of a Rumble Ball. In the 4Kids English dub it is named "Brain Boost" and in the video games as Smart Boost. This is also the form where he does his best strategizing, as he can utilize both human intelligence and reindeer sensitivity at the same time.
  • Heavy Point : Chopper's "human" form, which gives him a werehuman-like appearance and height. He uses this form to help steer the ship. Called "Heavy Boost" in the 4kids dub, and "Weight Boost" in the Funimation dub, 4kids videogames, and Viz Manga. This form imbues Chopper with super-human strength.

Rumble Ball Transformations

In addition to his normal transformations, Chopper developed the Rumble Ball, which gives its user several more transformations for three minutes by "distorting the wavelengths of transformation": Although the primary effects of the rumble ball only last three minutes, Chopper cannot consume a second ball for six hours without adverse effects, mainly the loss of control over his transformations.

  • Jumping Point : Chopper keeps his reindeer legs in a human-like form, which allows him to jump long distances. "Jumping Boost" in the 4Kids English dub.
  • Arm Point : Chopper's second most powerful form, his fore-hooves become extremely muscular in this form, powerful enough to inflict a great amount of damage. In the 4Kids English version, this is called his "Arm Boost"
  • Horn Point : Similar to Walking Point, but Chopper's forelegs get bulkier and his horns get larger and sharp. Chopper first uses Horn Point against the Mr.4 team, labeling it his "most powerful form". In the 4Kids English version it is called "Horn Boost".
  • Guard Point : Chopper's fur grows out and becomes an impenetrable shield against outside attacks. In the 4Kids English version it is named "Guard Boost".

Monster Point

Monster Point

If Chopper consumes three or more Rumble Balls within six hours, he grows to monstrous proportions and loses all self control. This form is extremely powerful, but also has the adverse effect of draining Chopper's life force. The only known way to reverse this transformation is by submerging Chopper in water, negating his Devil Fruit powers. Chopper changed into this form while fighting the CP9. In the game One Piece: Unlimited Adventure this form was called "Overlimit Chopper" in the Japanese version, and "Rampaging Chopper" in the English version. Additionally, Chopper utilized Monster Point once more, at the Sabaody Archipelago. During the Straw Hats' fight with Sentoumaru and the Pacifistas, Chopper panicked when as his friends were being mercilessly beaten by their opponents. In his fluster, he instinctively consumed three Rumble Balls and transformed. Although the fight has just begun, Chopper demonstrated the ability to hold off Sentoumaru with one swipe.

"Black Leg" Sanji

About Sanji

According to Eiichiro Oda, Sanji most resembles a duck. He is identified by the color blue, and smells of seafood and cigarettes.

Sanji is the Straw Hat crew's chain-smoking chef, whose dream is to find 'All Blue', a legendary ocean which contains all the fish in the world. He takes great pride in the meals he makes and considers them works of art. Sanji is also a very skilled fighter, who uses a fictional martial arts style called 'Red Leg' that makes use of only kicks. Sanji states that this is because a chef's hands are his prized possession and should not be risked in battle. He was trained by the once infamous pirate Red Leg Zeff, who was a chef himself and once battled in the grand line. In battle, he typically manipulates things from off-panel and then appears in the front lines at a very crucial moment. This has led to a running gag in the series centering around Sanji never being recognized by the Straw Hats' enemies, a joke culminating in the release of his first wanted poster. Sanji was born in the North Blue, but grew up in the East Blue. His left eye is always covered by his hair and almost always remains unseen.

Nine years before the Straw Hats meet him, a young Sanji is working aboard a floating restaurant as as a trainee chef in the North Blue. Even at this early point in his life, he dreams of finding 'All Blue'. This makes him somewhat of an outcast among the other chefs, who regard the sea as nothing more than a legend told to small children. The cruise ship is attacked by the pirate " Red leg" Zeff, and the ship sinks during the ensuing battle. Sanji is surprisingly rescued by Zeff, and they both wash onto the shore of a nearby desolate island. The island was completely made of rock. Its edges were too steep to climb and they had no way of getting nutrition. With almost no food left, Zeff splits the remaining rations with Sanji, keeping a large sack for himself since, as he tells Sanji, he is an adult with a larger stomach. He tells Sanji to wait for a rescue ship on the other side of the island. Many weeks pass, and with Sanji having finished his rations much earlier, he decides to steal Zeff's food. He tells the old man not to interfere or he will kill him, and slashes the large sack of food open, only to discover that it's just a sack of treasure. Sanji then notices Zeff's missing leg, and realizes Zeff had no food for the entire time they had been stranded and was forced to eat his own leg. Sanji tearfully asks why Zeff would do such a thing, and Zeff explains to him that they share the dream of finding 'All Blue'. The two are rescued some time later, and Zeff uses his treasure to establish the Baratie, a floating restaurant in the East Blue with Sanji as his sous-chef. Due to this ordeal, Sanji will never refuse someone a meal and becomes angry when someone wastes food.

In the Anime, Zeff did not eat his leg, but he cut it off in an attempt to save Sanji from drowning.

Sanji is one of the most popular One Piece characters, as he ranked third in a recent Japanese fan poll.

Sanji has a strong sense of chivalry, and he will never harm a woman, no matter what. As said by himself, he will never kick a woman even if he dies because that is how he was brought up. Sanji also seems to keep this code regardless of a woman's appearance. After the events of Enies Lobby, Sanji obtained a bounty poster, but the cameraman kept the lenscap on making the photo completetly black so a rough sketch of his appearance was made. Recently, in the Flying Fish Riders Arc, Iron-Mask Duval tried to wreak revenge on him because of his appearance being the spitting image of his bounty poster, making Sanji have his first enemy with a grudge.

Eiichiro Oda has said that the spiral end of Sanji's eyebrow channels the 'circular energy' of the universe.

In the FUNimation television broadcast of the anime, Sanji's cigarettes are removed. A FUNimation spokesman has stated this is due to Cartoon Network's broadcast standards, and the cigarettes will be retained in the uncut DVD releases.

Powers and abilities

Sanji is a powerful martial artist with superhuman strength, speed, and endurance. He is considered by the Straw Hat crew to be one of their strongest fighters. Sanji has mastered Red Leg, a fictional unarmed martial art which strictly uses the lower body and legs in combat similar to capoeira. Sanji's leg strength is great enough to smash through rock and defeat monstrous beasts in a single blow. Oda rates Sanji's kicking power as enough to shatter twenty one wooden baseball bats in one kick Sanji is also shown to be very acrobatic, using flips and handstands in his fighting. His fighting style's name is taken from the alias of "Red Leg" Zeff, Sanji's mentor and developer of the style. Red Leg possesses a variety of special attacks, most of which are simply exceptionally powerful kicks. These techniques are named in French, and generally refer to the part of the body Sanji is attacking.

Sanji's most powerful ability is Diable Jambe, which involves rotating at high speeds, heating his leg via friction until it glows red-hot. This powerful ability enhances his kick and literally burns his opponent when it connects, though it does no damage to Sanji. Oda states this is because Sanji's heart burns even hotter.

A unique attack to Sanji would be his beautification attack (Parage Shot!), which he demonstrated against chef Wanze. With several kicks to the face, Wanze's face changed to resemble one would expect from the protagonist of a shojou manga. This skill is shown again many chapters later on Iron Mask Duval.

As an expert chef, Sanji is capable of preparing almost any dish imaginable, while holding to a strong sense of the aesthetics of cooking. Sanji is also skilled in fighting with kitchen knives, as demonstrated against Cipher Pol chef Wanze. Though lacking the power and technique of Roronoa Zoro with a bladed weapon, he is able to make very accurate cuts.

"King Of Sniper" Sogeking

About Usopp

Eichiro Oda has stated that Usopp most resembles an armadillo. Oda uses the color yellow to represent Usopp, and he smells of gunpowder. His nose is nine inches long, and according to Mr. 2 Bon Clay's standards, Usopp possesses the world's weirdest/funniest nose.

Usopp's dream is to become a brave warrior of the sea, like his father Yasopp of the Red Haired Pirate Crew. After meeting the giants Dorry and Broggy, Usopp was inspired to travel to Elbaf one day and meet the proud warriors there.

Usopp is easily scared and always makes up excuses to avoid going on dangerous outings, excuses which are simply ignored by his crew-mates. Despite his timid nature, he will do anything to help his friends,if it means standing up to a far more powerful enemy. In battle he uses various tricks to deceive his opponent, such as calling out the name of a previously used attack but doing something completely different.

Usopp's father left to become a pirate when Usopp was still very young. Some time after this, Usopp's mother became very ill, and was on the verge of dying. He began lying to keep his mother's spirit up, often saying that Yassop and his pirate crew had returned to take them away with him. Even after she died, Usopp continued to run throughout the town every day yelling that pirates were coming. Usopp began calling himself a pirate and took in three younger children as his crew; Ninjin, Tamanegi and Piiman. Together they formed the "Usopp Pirates". When the Black Cat Pirates return to the island, Usopp, along with Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro and Nami, fight and defeat the pirates and their leader, Captain Kuro. After defeating the pirates Usopp is inspired by Luffy and crew, and decides to begin his journey toward becoming a great warrior. Originally planning to debark on his own, he is shocked when Luffy asks him to join the Straw Hat Pirates.

Usopp's wanted poster features him as Sogeking. His bounty likely results from the World Government's knowledge that it was he who burned their flag at Enies Lobby, effectively declaring war on the World Government.
According to a recent Japanese fan poll in the Shonen Jump magazine, Usopp is the 6th most popular character.

Powers and abilities

Usopp has outstanding marksmanship abilities with his slingshot and his remarkable accuracy often surprises his enemies. Usopp's ammunition is extremely varied, including rotten eggs, hot sauce, pepper, shuriken and powerful explosives. His attacks are named 'Stars' ("Boshi" in the original), e.g. Powder Star. He is capable of running extremely fast, an ability he gained as a result of running from the mobs of people he angered every day in his home town. He can also endure enormous amounts of damage; in his fight with Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas he was struck with a 4-ton metal bat and immediately resumed fighting. He also has a large arsenal of Skypiean Dials at his disposal, such as a Flash Dial, Impact Dial, and Breath Dial.

As Sogeking, Usopp introduced a newly developed weapon: Kabuto, a slingshot connected to the end of a long staff. Several rubber straps are attached to the five prongs of the weapon, adding stability and range. Breath Dials add spin to projectiles once they launch, allowing Usopp to utilize all manner of trajectories. The Dials can also be changed, greatly increasing the weapon's utility. Using the Kabuto, Usopp is even able to outrange guns, as evidenced in the Enies Lobby arc where he single-handedly delays Spandam from taking fellow crewmate Robin past the Gates of Justice by shooting all the marines with explosive projectiles from an extremely distant location.

His alter-ego Sogeking has been used as a battle skill as well. While wearing the mask he is able to think like a great warrior and even summon courage to fight.

Usopp is a talented inventor, creating the Clima Tact for Nami and the dial-upgraded Perfect Clima Tact. Prior to Franky joining, he is the crew's acting carpenter and patches up the Going Merry whenever it's damaged. He also has notable artistic talent, shown in his painting the Straw Hat jolly roger and crafting of detailed snow sculptures (to which Luffy's attempts pale in comparison). Usopp uses special goggles he obtained in Loguetown to enhance his vision.

"Cat Burglar" Nami

About Nami

Nami is the first member of the Straw Hat Pirates to appear in the anime series, but the third to appear in the manga. Likely one of the best navigators currently sailing the Grand Line, Nami acts in the roles of treasurer and quartermaster as well.

Along with Nico Robin, Tony Tony Chopper and Usopp, Nami is one of the smartest of the Straw Hats and the third smartest character during the East Blue saga according to Oda, the first being Ben Beckman of the Red-Haired pirates and the second being Captain Kuro. She is an excellent navigator and has the ability to recognize and analyze even the slightest changes in the weather through sheer intuition, thus saving the ship and the crew from the very unstable Grand Line weather on multiple occasions.

Her two favorite things are money and mikan (mandarin oranges, a symbol of prosperity and wealth in Japan), often translated to tangerines (the English manga uses "tangerines"), because of her love of her foster mother, Bellemere.

Nami's dream is to draw a perfect map of the world, a task not yet accomplished by anyone due to the harsh nature of the oceans in the Grand Line. The first map Nami plotted was the island Cocoyashi village at the age of 8.

Nami has a tattoo on her left shoulder which represents mikan and pinwheels (a homage to her past), where she used to have a tattoo representing her membership in Arlong's Crew. Near the beginning of the series, Nami wore thick, low cut leather boots and a simple blouse and a mini-skirt. However, during the Arlong Park arc and thereafter, Nami wore open-toed shoes and more revealing outfits (With the tattoo no longer being a secret). She usually pairs her tops with miniskirts with rings on them. Her breasts have increased in size as the story progresses(according to Oda, this is because she is only 18 and still in her "growth phase").

The author has also replied to a fan's question to saying that Nami's measurements are as follows:

  • Height 169cm (5' 6½ in).
  • Dress size (B95 W55 H85) 32DD-22-33.

Oda has also said that Nami resembles a cat, that he uses the color orange to represent her, and she smells of mikan and money. Also, Oda has stated that Nami's favorite foods are oranges and all fruits.

Her nickname, "Cat Burglar", comes from "dorobō neko", which can also mean "manstealer" in Japanese. Due to the 4Kids adaption many items of her merchandise used "Nami the Navigator", instead of just "Nami".

Powers and abilities

Nami is a highly skilled navigator and cartographer. She has the innate ability to sense changes in the weather and can even predict the appearance of the supposedly unpredictable cyclones of the Grand Line. She often claims that she feels a change in atmospheric pressure when predicting the weather. She is also an excellent thief and pickpocket who can steal small items such as keys on light encounters without the victim noticing.

Nami is not as skilled a combatant as some of the Straw Hats, although she is able to wield a staff, and can take down normal pirates or marines with few problems. She is able to unleash quick and moderately powerful strikes, and during the Arabasta arc and beyond, uses a weather manipulating staff Usopp created for her, the Clima Tact, to fight. At first, the weapon was actually partly used for party tricks, but using certain combinations, Nami turns the tomfoolery of Usopp into a deadly force. In the 4kids dub of the show, the Clima Tact was re-named "The Weather Forcer," and in the English manga it is called the Climate Baton.

Nami was given a Dial enhanced Clima-Tact, the "Perfect Clima-Tact" which doesn't seem to able to use Tornado Tempo, by Usopp. The new weapon was powerful enough to wipe out an entire group of soldiers.

Some common techniques include Thunderbolt Tempo/Tempest (using Heat and Cool Balls, a cloud is formed, and by sending a Thunder Ball in, a huge bolt of lightning is summoned) and Mirage Tempo/Tempest (by manipulating the heat of the surrounding, Nami can create illusory copies of herself, which is further augmented by the Perfect Clima Tact's Mirage Tempo Fata Morgana). However, these illusions are not perfect as they create different looking Namis: a normal one, a tall and skinny one, a muscular one, a short and fat one, and a child. Despite this, the real Nami could be any of these, further confusing the opponent.

In the past, Nami has defeated Miss Doublefinger, the strongest female in Baroque Works after Nico Robin. She also defeated Hotori and Kotori, and helped Luffy defeat Buggy. She helped Luffy defeat Foxy and Porche by using Thunderstorm Tempo to create rain. One of her greatest achievements in battle was defeating the CP9 agent Kalifa.

"Pirate Hunter" Roronoa Zoro

About Zoro

According to Eiichiro Oda, Zoro resembles a shark. Oda uses the color green to represent Zoro, and he smells of steel. Oda has also said that Zoro's favorite foods are white rice, sea monster meat, and "stuff that goes with ale" . His family name, Roronoa, comes from the real-life French pirate François l'Ollonais.

Zoro is a skilled swordsman, able to use one, two and three swords in varying attack styles, and even no swords, although he is most proficient with the fictional sword style Santōryū (literally: three sword style), clutching his third sword in his mouth. Zoro is somehow able to speak with his sword held in his mouth; Eiichiro Oda has stated that it is his heart that allows him to do so. Though not a samurai, he maintains his own code of honor. His goal is to become the greatest swordsman in the world, by beating the current greatest swordsman, Hawkeye Mihawk.

As a child, Zoro trained in a dojo in Shimoshiki Village. He defeated all of the adults of the dojo, but consistently lost to Kuina, the sensei's daughter. After two thousand and one victories against Zoro, Kuina confided in him. Her father told her that as a woman, she would naturally become weaker than Zoro and could never be a great sword fighter. Zoro became furious, telling Kuina that if one day he beat her, to explain it as a result of her gender would be an insult to the effort and training he put in to defeat her. The two children vow that one of them will become the world's strongest sword fighter. The next morning, Kuina dies falling down a set of stairs. Zoro asks her father for her katana, Wadō Ichimonji, and swears to become a swordsman so renowned that his name will be heard even in heaven. To fulfill his dream he must defeat Dracule "Hawk-Eye" Mihawk, the man currently regarded as the strongest sword fighter in the One Piece world. Zoro also displays several personality quirks, a trait common in One Piece characters. Zoro is extremely poor at understanding geographical directions and gets lost very easily. Zoro also sleeps a great deal, and has been known to sleep through important events. Zoro also likes to drink, and although he has an abnormally high alcohol tolerance, he claims that a true swordsman should never let himself get drunk. Zoro is also very loyal to Luffy, even begging Bartholomew Kuma, a Shichibukai, to exchange Luffy's life for his.

Powers and abilities

Over the course of the story Zoro has used many different swords, carrying three at a time with one, the Wadō Ichimonji, remaining with him through the entire series thus far. His other notable swords are Sandai Kitetsu, Yubashiri (Yu-bashiri in the Viz translation) and the recently obtained Shuusui which replaced the broken Yubashiri. Most of Zoro's swords have been Meitou (Named Blade).

Zoro has several sword techniques at his disposal, using one sword, two swords, or all three. He is also capable of fighting effectively with no swords, and his physical strength is enough to lift a building. Zoro also has the ability to cut through solid steel, or materials as hard as steel, which he learned when fighting Das Bones (Baroque Works Mr. 1) in Arabasta. He is also capable of using the 'Asura' technique, which gives Zoro three faces and six arms, thus totaling nine swords. Including Ichibugen, the only one seen so far is Makyuusen. In addition, Zoro can expand the muscle mass of his arms, an ability he often employs to break through opponent's physical defenses. He also possesses incredible vitality, as he regularly loses immense amounts of blood during battle. Zoro has stated that he is not very good at 1 sword style during his fight with the Nyaban Brothers.
